This newest of Bath orchestras (one year old this Festival!) has two aims. Firstly it brings to the City a baroque
ensemble trained in specialist Baroque techniques and playing on autentic instruments. Secondly
some 40% of its members are talented local students who are thus given an opportunity to become
familiar with the early music repertoire and to rehearse and perform with professionals.

Bath Baroque was founded in 1995 with the primary objective of providing
talented young musicians with the opportunity to gain practical experience of
period orchestral performance on original
instruments alongside professional musicians.
Performing opportunities are extensive - apart from its own
concerts, the orchestra has been involved in major events such as the Bath
International Music Festival, and also undertakes a wide range of chamber
concerts.
Period performance has become almost an industry in its own
right over the last thirty or so years. In the process it has become musically
and technically more demanding of its participants.

However, particularly in the
UK, opportunities for young
would-be professionals to gain experience playing in a large scale
period ensemble have if anything diminished. Bath Baroque, which is open to all
young musicians from the age of approximately sixteen to twenty two, attempts to
fill this gap. There is also a training string orchestra, I Giovani,
for younger string players to become familiar with Baroque
repertoire, style and technique.
